More Volunteers!
We are always delighted to hear from people who are interested in volunteering. No experience needed – just energy and enthusiasm. The Wendell Park Gardening Friends meet in the park on the first Sunday of every month at 10am to tackle jobs that need doing; just drop by and join us. We also work in the park at other times during the week, so if you have a query about volunteering, click here.
Donations for Planting
We receive no regular funding from the council for the planting in the park, so all the money for plants, bulbs and shrubs comes from fund-raising and private donations. However, we are grateful for the two recent one-off deliveries of shrubs from the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.
If you would like to help us in our mission to make the park’s borders as colourful and vibrant as possible, please make a donation using the link at the top of our Home page. Every penny we raise is ploughed back into the park.
A Public Toilet
The park is heavily used by families, school groups and toddler play groups. We have been asking Hammersmith and Fulham council for several years to explore with us the feasibility of installing a public toilet (there is space for it in the yard which backs onto the north side of the park). If you live locally and would like to have a toilet in the park, please write to your local councillor.
A Second Tap
Watering the park is a laborious process, as there is only one tap (in the north corner of the park) and hoses are very heavy. A second tap would make watering the park during hot spells much easier. We have talked to Hammersmith and Fulham council about installing a second tap and offered to raise the money to pay for it.
Less Litter – and Fox-Free Bins
Like all public spaces in Britain, we have a litter problem. Too many people can’t be bothered to put food wrappers, cigarette butts, bottles and cans in the bins. Food waste that is left in the park is often spread around at night by foxes, who have no trouble getting into the bins. Please take your litter home with you and, if you see litter in the park and it’s safe to do so, pick it up and dispose of it in one of the many bins.
More Biodiversity
There are lots of birds in the park, including starlings, robins, blue tits, sparrows and goldfinches, but we’d like to do even better in making the park a haven for wildlife. We have consulted the local charity Wild Chiswick on how best to do this, and have plans to put in nesting boxes, feeders, bug hotels, as well as increasing our bee-friendly planting.
